Melanotan II was isolated and upon evaluation was determined to be 1,000 times more potent than its naturally-occurring counterpart. A cyclic lactam analog of α-MSH, it has the amino acid sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2.
